Valthirian Arc: A near perfect mobile game, but that's all it is.
(Random smartassery: "it's not on mobile!" No. But it should be. Because it's essentially a mobile game.)
When this game launched, I believe they wanted some $40 for it. I could tell from the demo that it wasn't going to be worth that.
I got lucky and picked it up on sale for under $10. I'd say it's worth about $5. Again, when you've played games like Chaos Rings III that are FAR superior to this at a fraction of the price, it's hard to justify prices.
What I Liked
Well...some of the advanced classes are fun to use, like the Scholarsage.
What I Didn't Like
This is much easier to write.
First of all, I couldn't stand the mandatory graduation requirement. You end up churning students and thus they mean less until near end of the game when you have so many extra you can afford to do it without losing power.
The Academy building would have been interesting for the boosts, except that it's tedious to go around and check in when there's an alert (!) waiting.
Experience doesn't go nearly far enough for any class except Apprentice.
There is a story, but it's so poorly told that it won't matter.
Random, strange difficulty spikes. One quest has you defending a ship against mermaids; I got absolutely rocked three times, and all it took was to promote class on two of my students - without any additional leveling - and all of a sudden it was a cakewalk. We call that progress gating and it's annoying.
There is a blacksmith, but by the time you get items good enough for the best weapons, you will have already found better ones laying around stages.
Like other games, if the character you're controlling dies, it's game (quest) over. While you can just pick up where you left off, it's still annoying that they can't just switch you to one of the other three students and keep going, especially if it was a fluke that you died.
You're going through the same three maps with slight variations on a theme. It got old, really fast.
Near the end, the game completely crashed after I had killed a VERY difficult boss. It has autosave, but the autosave only kicks in when you're back at the Academy or after a story advancing cutscene. In this case the crash happened right before that cutscene; thus resulting in the loss of over 15 minutes of wasted time chipping away at the bastid.
There really wasn't a reason to play the game again (thank the deities) and yes, it's a good airplane-pass-the-time type of game. It's just not worth the full asking price, at all.
